    讲座人简介: Johannes Schwank holds a Ph. D. degree from Innsbruck University in Austria. In 1978, he came to the University of Michigan as a Fulbright-Hays scholar to conduct postdoctoral research in the area of catalysis with Professor Giuseppe Parravano. He has been on the faculty at the University of Michigan since 1980. He held Visiting Professorships at the University of Innsbruck and at the Technical University of Vienna, Austria. He served as Chairman of the Chemical Engineering Department from 1990 – 1995, and he served on the Chemical Engineering Executive and Advisory Committee (ChEAC), as Chemical Engineering Graduate Program Advisor, and as Associate Director of the Electron Microbeam Analysis Laboratory (EMAL). He has served on a Dean Search Committee and as the chair of the Chemical Engineering Chair Search Advisory Committee. He has served on the University of Michigan Senate, and has chaired numerous committees and technical conferences. He was twice the chair of the CoE Nominating Committee, and was a member of the University of Michigan Energy Council. He also chaired the College of Engineering Task Force on Industrial Contracting, and the University of Michigan Programming Group for Renovation of the Phoenix Memorial Lab. He is a Member of the CoE Automotive Council, a Faculty Fellow of the Michigan Memorial Phoenix Energy Institute, and an ERB Institute Faculty Affiliate. He served on the CoE Scholastic Standing Committee, the Library Committee, and the Council on the Environment. He was elected in 2008 to the College of Engineering Executive Committee, serving a three-year term. He is the founding Director of the Transportation Energy Center. His research spans a wide range of topics, including synthetic fuels, hydrogen production from gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel, solid oxide fuel cells, automotive emission control catalysts, novel catalyst synthesis and characterization methods, and nanostructured materials for energy storage and gas sensing applications. He is the author of more than 150 publications, and holds eight U.S. patents. He has supervised more than thirty graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. He received the Giuseppe Parravano Award for Excellence in Catalysis Research, the Research Excellence Award, and Class of 1938 E Distinguished Service Award from the University of Michigan. He has taught most of the core courses in chemical engineering, including the capstone design course, and has developed a new graduate course on hydrogen technology and a new graduate course on alternative energy. He has also developed and taught short courses on the science and engineering of fuel cells and catalytic fuel processors for industry, NASA, the US military, and held tutorials on nanostructured catalytic materials in the US, Thailand, and Saudi Arabia. Recently, he testified on the pro's and con's of the hydrogen economy before a Subcommittee of the U.S. House of Representatives. He is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and has served as Treasurer of the Detroit Chapter, and is currently a Board Member. He is also a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the Materials Research Society, the American Society for Engineering Education, the North American Catalysis Society, and the Michigan Catalysis Society, where he served as Treasurer, Vice President, and President. He currently serves on the editorial board of "Catalysis Communications", and as editor-in-chief of the Open Energy and Fuels Journal. He is a co-founder and member of an Ann Arbor-based startup company, Energy Technology Components, LLC.
