                              Prof. Dr. Zhang Zhenxi
                           Xi"an Jiaotong University

4-9-2001
16th Annual Conference of the German-Chinese and the
Chinese-German Societies for Medicine in Regensburg, September 20-22, 2001

Dear Colleague Prof. Dr. Zhang Zhenxi,

based on our successful biomedical engineering (BME) programs at the previous meetings in Beijing (1994), in Berlin (1995), in Chengdu (1996), in Guangzhou (1998), in Heidelberg (1999), and in Xi’an (2000) the Board of Directors of the German-Chinese and of the Chinese-German Societies for Medicine decided to implement again a BME program for the upcoming meeting in Regensburg. I was asked to organize the BME portion of the meeting.
Main topics of the medically oriented portion of the meeting will include hematology and imaging for diagnostics and therapeutics. The topics of the biomedical engineering program will include biomaterials, biosensors, and imaging methodologies for diagnostics and therapy. The BME Technical Committee consists of: Prof. Jochen EDRICH (Ulm), Prof.Dickhaus (Heilbronn/Heidelberg), Prof. Appel (Hamburg), Prof. BAI Jing (Beijing), Prof. ZHANG Zhenxi (Xi‘an), and Prof. JIANG Dazong (Xi"an).
It is my pleasure, to invite you to submit by May 15, 2001 abstracts of papers for oral presentations of 15 minutes duration. Each paper should describe development and/or research results in one of your BME specialties, and clearly point out the novelty of your approach. For our abstract brochure we need from you an abstract of maximally 15 lines in each of the two languages, Chinese and English. Support in the conference preparation will also be provided by my former colleague in Ulm, Prof. ZHANG Tongsheng, who now resides at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. Acceptance letters will be sent out during the month of June.
In addition to our regular sessions there will be a panel on Chinese-German collaborations in the BME field. Topics in this panel will also include discussions on the impact of the new exchange program just recently signed in Beijing by the German Government and the Chinese Government. You are invited to give a short presentation of a few minutes during this panel about your ongoing and/or planned BME collaborations. Please, provide the title of your presentation together with your abstract submission.
Furthermore there will be tours to medical/pharmaceutical/technical companies in and around Regensburg, as well as visits of several of the modern and well equipped clinics of the University Hospital.
Your air transportation should be arranged and paid for by your own Chinese sources. For authors of accepted papers the transportation in Germany, meals, conference fees, as well as lodging in Regensburg during your stay from September 17 to September 23, 2001 will be paid for / reimbursed by the German-Chinese Society for Medicine.
Dear colleague, I hope that you will be able to come to Regensburg, since this would provide an excellent opportunity for starting a new professional relationship, and, perhaps, for planning a collaborative joint venture on a BME project of mutual interest that might be fundable by one of the new Scientific Collaboration Programs of the Chinese and German governments.
We look forward to hearing from you soon, and receiving your abstracts as soon as possible in order to accomplish a timely preparation of the program.
Sincerely,

Jochen Edrich
